At the beginning of IDRD I had researched into the Bangladeshi garment workers and how restricted they are with their work and minimum pay they receive. From this I Came from the idea of crumpled money. This was the starting point for this project. I then created designs and textiles from my research. From last unit i had part toiled Paper bag trousers and a ruched sleeve dress.
I really liked sampling with the 'Crumpled' Effect in different mediums. My favourite so far has to be the moustache effect.
This is a long process, however the outcome is worth it. There are many different ways of using this technique. My personal favourite was attaching a piece of the denim (wet) to the silicone mould and then sand blasting over the top. Although, this was a very challenging task due to the machine being a very awkward piece of equipment to work with and sometimes quite unpredictable. This was considered very time consuming therefore if i was to do it again I would now allow a lot more extra time. The machine became hard to control as the hose was very stiff and hard to move. Myself and a member from the EPC were able to solve this problem by creating a 'wall' for the mould and denim to nail to. This worked very well!! ( The brown marks on the denim is the sand due the the denim being slightly wet) The image of this dress toil was when I had created designs with ruched sleeves. When I Started making my final toils i came the the conclusion i would have to create a lining within the sleeve to keep in place. Otherwise the sleeve would constantly move or fall down and it would also not look visually appealing on a hanger. Here is where i added a lining to my sleeves to keep the ruched like effect in place. This was a very challenging task to start off with as i also had plackets i had to keep in mind as well.
Toiling final the paper bag trousers When creating the final garment it took a lot of trial and error to create the exact colour i wanted when i was dying my fabric in the indigo vat. This was mainly due to the fact i was trying to achieve an ombre effect on the sleeves where it is darker at the cuffs and lighter at the shoulders. Putting together the jacket!
Creating patch work for the final trousers. Sand blasting onto my final fabric! I had also created a shibori dyed indigo bodice. I did not feel the need to toil any of this as I have made a basic bodice before.
